Making Marketing Resolutions that Make Sense

Making Marketing Resolutions that Make Sense


As the year begins to wind down, it’s natural to start thinking about how we’re going to do things so much better next year.  The challenge is to make our New Year’s Resolutions definitive, with timelines, so they actually happen.  We all know what usually occurs with most of our Resolutions.  Well, let’s resolve that next year will be different: we’ll actually implement a few of them!

            First of all, don’t make too many.  Better to limit yourself to three that are implemented than to ten that aren’t.

            Here are some examples of Resolutions that are unfocused, then improved upon.

1. “Next year we’re going to pay more attention to marketing.”

Now what does that mean?  Here’s something more specific (you’re welcome to modify these intentions to suit your circumstances, but you get the idea):            “We will conduct monthly staff meetings to elicit client feedback from our front-line employees.  This will enable us to respond more effectively to the             marketplace.”

2. “Next year we’re going to write a Marketing Plan.”

Try this:  “We want a Marketing Plan in place by March 31st at the latest.  Since we don’t have the time or staff, we will budget for and hire a marketing consultant.”  (Visit www.azobleassoc.com for our market planning course and products.)

3. “Next year we’re going to create a monthly newsletter.”

Slow down.  If a company newsletter is new to you, you might be taking on too much too fast.  You’re destined to get one or two issues out and become drained by the frequency of the effort.  Rather, “If we decide at an early January staff meeting that producing a newsletter could help us create TOMA (Top-of-Mind Awareness) with our clients, we’ll start with quarterly issues.  Or maybe we’ll commit to a one-page, bi-monthly email update.”

Resolutions need specifics, and they need timeframes.  Otherwise they’re too vague.  You know how far you’ve progressed when you’ve said, “I have to lose weight next year.”  Maybe you’ve joined a gym and gone for a month or so, but those gyms rake it in with prepaid sign-ups and people quitting after a short period of time.
